Grand Canyon Historical Information - A Slice of Time |
|
|
Natural Grand Canyon historical information begins millions of years ago. Over time, the rock formations began to shift, causing a break in the Earth, and the separation would leave what we now are able to view at Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Human history at the Grand Canyon begins a long time ago. The first sign of human life in the Grand Canyon has been highly debated, but most often it is cited at approximately eleven thousand years ago. Archaeologists had found remnants of twig figurines that suggested human occupancy at this time. What has been proven is that Native Americans had been making their home in the depths of the canyon roughly four thousand years ago. Several of the tribes were nomadic and chased the game through several different states. With all the various forms of wildlife available to them in the northern part of Arizona, this was the perfect temporary setting in order to live off the land. Some of the tribes that have resided in the famous location over the years included the Pueblos, Cerbat and Navajo Indians. During the sixteenth century, Grand Canyon historical information shows that Spanish exploration failed due to the overwhelming pride and greed of the explorers. They came, they saw, they crossed the Colorado River and did think to head slightly southwest in order to view what we know as this spectacular site. By the mid-nineteenth century, the Grand Canyon was primed for exploration, and a great interest spread like wildfire, in hopes of finding buried treasure. During this time John Wesley Powell gathered his men and began forging treacherous conditions to find out the mysteries behind the Grand Canyon. Just before, and right after the turn of the century, entrepreneurs started to notice the possible tourism industry that this spectacular place could bring. Lodges and restaurants began to open near or around the Grand Canyon, and it soon was declared a national landmark by President Roosevelt in 1908. Today, it is a tourism force to be reckoned with, welcoming visitors from all over the world by the millions each year. What are you waiting for? Now that you are aware of the Grand Canyon historical information, let’s go exploring!
